A Visit to Mountain Creek During the Trout Spawning Run

On Monday 6th July, Ray and his long-time friend Tony Browning made the trip to Mountain Creek at Lake Sorell. Why? To witness one of Tasmania's most incredible natural events, the annual wild trout spawning run.

Ray mentioned that it had been almost 45 years since he had last made the trip, bringing back plenty of fond memories. There's something pretty special about standing beside the creek and watching these magnificent fish make their way upstream to spawn.

Mountain Creek is the main spawning stream for trout in Lake Sorell. Brown trout generally spawn from May through to July, while rainbow trout typically spawn between September and October, although these times can vary depending on weather conditions and rainfall.

For many Tasmanians, this is one of our best kept secrets. It's a unique opportunity to see wild trout in their natural environment and a great reminder of just how lucky we are to have places like this right on our doorstep.

If you're planning a visit to Mountain Creek during the spawning season, please remember to respect both the fish and the surrounding environment. The Inland Fisheries Service reminds visitors that the taking or wilful disturbance of fish in Mountain Creek is prohibited. Please do not interfere with the fish traps or screens, and always take your rubbish home with you.

Fishing is also prohibited at all times within a 50-metre radius of the mouth of Mountain Creek.

If you've never experienced the trout spawning run before, it's well worth adding to your list. Just remember to admire it from a distance so future generations can continue to enjoy this remarkable natural event.

We hope you enjoy this incredible Tasmanian experience as much as we do. If you make the trip, we'd love to see your photos and hear about your experience.
